The Styles of Martial Arts

The systematized and codified practice of the art of warfare or traditional combat is referred to as Martial arts. Martial arts vary widely, and may focus on a specific area or combination of areas, but they can be broadly grouped into focusing on strikes, grappling, or weapons training. While each style- boxing, karate, kung fu, wrestling, kali, kendo, judo, tai chi etc – have unique facets that differentiate it from other martial arts, a common characteristic is the systematization of fighting techniques. Moreover all the different types of martial arts possess the objective of defending oneself or others from physical threat through the use of blocks, kicks, punches etc. The various styles of martial arts can be broadly classified on the basis of their unique style:
• Striking or Stand-Up Styles
• Grappling or Ground Fighting Styles
• Throwing or Take down Styles
• Weapons Based Styles
• Low Impact or Meditative Styles
